Aghdam Juma Mosque
Agdam Friday Mosque; Cüma Məscidi
Late-Ottoman-era Friday mosque in the Aghdam district, designed by Karbalayi Safikhan Garabaghi. The town of Aghdam was captured by Armenian forces in July 1993 and emptied of its Azerbaijani population; over the following decades the entire town was looted and reduced to ruins ("the Hiroshima of the Caucasus", de Waal). The mosque was the only major structure left standing. Per de Waal's 2003 reporting and subsequent journalism, the floor of the mosque was used as a shelter for cattle and pigs during the period of Armenian control. The mosque returned to Azerbaijani control in November 2020 and has since been restored as part of the "Great Return" reconstruction programme.
