Pentagonal complex on the Absheron peninsula northeast of Baku, built around natural-gas vents that produced perpetual flames before the gas was diverted to industry in the 1960s. Constructed by Indian (Sikh and Hindu) merchants of the Caspian-Caucasus trade in the 17th-18th c. on a site of older Zoroastrian use. Functioning museum since 1975.
