Narekavank Monastery
Site of the medieval poet-mystic Saint Gregory of Narek.
One of the most important medieval Armenian monasteries, the spiritual home of the 10th-c. mystic Gregory of Narek whose Book of Lamentations is the central work of Armenian devotional literature. Survived 1915 in part, with damage; the remaining structures were demolished in 1951 and the site converted to a mosque. Photographs and architectural records survive in Hovannisian and Cuneo.
