Mausoleum of the 12th-c. Persian-language poet Nizami Ganjavi in Ganja. The original mausoleum is recorded in 17th-c. Persian sources; the current 17-metre cylindrical tower was constructed 1991-92 in granite as a national-symbol project of newly-independent Azerbaijan. Nizami's ethnic identification is itself a Soviet-era controversy; the present Azerbaijani state position is that he was an Azerbaijani national poet writing in Persian.
