Seat of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia from 1293 until the Catholicos and the surviving community evacuated under French escort in 1921 at the close of the French Cilicia mandate. The Catholicosate relocated to Antelias, Lebanon, where it remains. The Sis cathedral has been used as a mosque since the early Republican period in Turkey.
