Major medieval Armenian monastery on the Iranian side of the Aras river, opposite the destroyed Julfa Armenian khachkar field in Azerbaijani Nakhichevan. Designated UNESCO World Heritage Site (with the Iranian Monastic Ensembles of St Thaddaeus and St Mary) in 2008. Continues as a functioning Armenian Apostolic monastic community under the Iranian Ministry of Cultural Heritage.
