St Yeghishe Arakyal Monastery near Mataghis/Jraberd is part of the medieval Armenian sacred geography of northern Karabakh. After the 2023 Azerbaijani takeover of the remaining Armenian-controlled areas, the site came under Azerbaijani authority. Monitoring has indicated damage to ancillary elements and khachkars while the principal building remains standing. The monastery's layered name, connected to the apostolic tradition, shows why Karabakh heritage is not only architectural: it carries ecclesiastical history and local pilgrimage memory. The central preservation questions are now access, inscription integrity, treatment of surrounding cemetery stones and interpretive framing. As with Dadivank and Gandzasar, standing walls are necessary but not sufficient if the Armenian liturgical and inscriptional identity is stripped away.
