Companion battle to Sardarapat

Bash-Aparan was one of the three decisive Armenian defensive battles of May 1918. While Sardarapat became the best-known symbol, Bash-Aparan helped block another Ottoman axis of advance toward the Armenian heartland. The battles were fought by Armenian military units, volunteers and civilians in the emergency between imperial collapse and state formation.

Its significance is cumulative. Bash-Aparan by itself did not create Armenia, but together with Sardarapat and Karakilisa it prevented a total Ottoman breakthrough. That space made the declaration of the First Republic possible on 28 May 1918. The battle is therefore part of the atlas's statehood chain: genocide, refugee flight, improvised defence, then a fragile republic. editorial
