Ashagi (Lower) Govhar Agha Mosque, Shusha
Aşağı Gövhər Ağa Məscidi
The Ashagi, or Lower, Govhar Agha Mosque is one of Shusha's principal Azerbaijani Muslim monuments and part of the Safikhan Garabaghi architectural legacy. During Armenian control of Shusha from 1992 to 2020 it stood in damaged and neglected condition, with Azerbaijani accounts alleging misuse and desecration. Its post-2020 restoration is central to Azerbaijan's narrative of return to Shusha as a cultural capital. The mosque should be read in parallel with Armenian churches in the same city, especially Ghazanchetsots and Kanach Zham: Shusha contains mutually wounded heritage records. For Azerbaijanis, the mosque's neglect confirmed occupation; for Armenians, post-2020 alteration of Armenian churches confirms erasure under restored Azerbaijani control.
