Cave monastery in the Azat valley above Yerevan. Named for the Holy Lance brought there by the apostle Thaddaeus, kept now at Etchmiadzin. The principal church of 1215 and the rock-hewn chapels of the 13th c. are among the masterpieces of Armenian medieval architecture. UNESCO World Heritage 2000.
