Principal Armenian monastery of the Mush plain and one of the oldest monastic foundations in Armenian Christianity, traditionally founded by Saint Gregory the Illuminator on the site of a pagan temple. Centre of pilgrimage and manuscript production for over a millennium. Destroyed in 1915 during the Bitlis-Muş deportation operations; the principal church was dynamited and the monastic library scattered. Site is now a Turkish military zone; only foundations remain.
