Ismayilova's reporting on the financial holdings of the Aliyev family, much of it for RFE/RL and OCCRP, made her the most prominent target of the regime's post-2013 crackdown on independent journalism. The ECHR Aliyev v. Azerbaijan line of cases established the systemic Article 18 violation pattern her prosecution exemplified. Her case is anchored in the wider systemic political-prisoner record.
